مواقع التراث العالمي هي معالم تقوم لجنة التراث العالمي في اليونسكو بترشيحها ليتم إدراجها ضمن برنامج مواقع التراث الدولية التي تديره اليونسكو. هذه المعالم قد تكون طبيعية، كالغابات وسلاسل الجبال، وقد تكون من صنع الإنسان، كالبنايات والمدن.
انطلق هذا البرنامج عن طريق اتفاقية حماية التراث العالمي الثقافي والطبيعي والذي تُبني خلال المؤتمر العام لليونسكو والذي عقد في 16 نوفمبر 1972 م. ومنذ توقيعها، فقد صادقت 180 دولة على هذه الاتفاقية. يهدف البرنامج إلى تصنيف وتسمية والحفاظ على المواقع ذات الأهمية الخاصة للجنس البشري، سواء كانت ثقافية أو طبيعية. ومن خلال هذه الاتفاقية، تحصل المواقع المدرجة في هذا البرنامج على مساعدات مالية تحت شروط معينة.
بلغ عدد المواقع المدرجة في هذه القائمة حتى عام 2008، 878 موقعا، منها 679 موقعا ثقافيا و174 موقعا طبيعيا و25 موقعا يدخل ضمن الصنفين، في 145 دولة من الدول الأعضاء. وترمز اليونسكو إلى كل موقع من هذه المواقع برقم خاص، ولكن مع تغيير نظام الترقييم فقد يتم إعادة إدراج بعض المواقع ضمن تصنيف أكبر. ولذلك، فإن نظام الترقيم الحالي وصل إلى 1100 بالرغم من أن عدد المواقع أقل من ذلك. حاليا، تحمل إيطاليا الرقم الأكبر في عدد المواقع التراثية وهو 43 موقعا.
يعتبر كل موقع من مواقع التراث ملكا للدولة التي يقع ضمن حدودها، ولكنه يحصل على اهتمام من المجتمع الدولي للتأكد من الحفاظ عليه للأجيال القادمة. وتشترك جميع الدول الأعضاء في الاتفاقية، والبالغ عددها 180 دولة، في حماية والحفاظ على هذه المواقع.
